LSI - Where can we actually apply it? (5/5)


As a class after deep diving into the world of LSI , getting a holistic view on the tools used, the approaches to be followed and the major aspects to be taken into consideration what remains of major importance now is looking at the different setups wherein LSI can be used.

LSI involves large scale changes but covers all 4 areas of intervention most likely - Individual, Group, Organisation and Systems Level.

It is indeed very interesting to see that apart from the usual Business Context, where all can we use the different approaches of LSI.

LSI is used on every continent, in many different cultures and sectors. The following are some examples of applications in specific sectors:
Business
  • The complete redesign of a product line in sixteen hours: from raw materials to the showroom floor, using Future Search; 
  • Strategy development involving clients and suppliers
  • Integration of cultures following a merger of any size
  • Addressing quality, safety and productivity issues in manufacturing industry
  • Whole Scale Change of a chemical company into an organisation which is able to constantly adapt itself and which focuses on delivering value to clients
Government
  • Development of new arrangements for the community , for new resources , their sourcing and procurement - using the World Cafe Approach
  • Inter departmental goal setting and seamless transcendence of routine processes and activities - Future search.
Development cooperation
  • Formulation of new policies for capacity development, using Open Space
  • Identification and formulation of projects and programmes
  • Search for a vision and planning for the future of the target group.
Communities
  • After the civil war in El Salvador, Open Space was used to invite the former opponents to work out plans together for rebuilding communities
  • Planning innovation of economic activity in a region with high unemployment together with schools, business parties and governmental agencies to boost employment opportunities for young people
  • Planning for the renewal of a city centre together with all stakeholders
  • Strengthening partnerships among agencies
Education
  • Solving problems in a comprehensive school by involving stakeholders (students, teachers, parents, council, neighbourhood)
  • Developing a vision and strategic planning together after schools have been merged
  • Realising social work placements for students
  • Finding strategies to use training experience in practical work situations in a Search Conference
Healthcare
  • Improving collaboration between teams and task force groups within a district
  • Planning the renovation of a hospital: design, logistics, planning, design of working procedures
  • Coordinating the aid of "multi-problem" families
Consultancy
  • Training consultants in organising and facilitating an LSI process for strategy and vision development with clients
  • Empowering the network of the Society for Organisational Learning  using Open Space


The list is only Illustrative, given the potential of LSI and the plethora of opportunities and possibilities - an exhaustive list is difficult to contain.

Reinforcing Loop in Action

A system represents a complex dynamic between its various sub-units. One of the most visible parts of a system is the reinforcing loop. The reinforcing loop is perhaps most visible because it works on an incremental basis. It is that fundamental element in a system that defines growth and increment. As defined by Senge, a system is said to be in a reinforcing loop when each small action builds on the other. How to calculate ROI of Large system change intervention?

It’s true that companies spend a lot on large system change interventions; this makes it very crucial that companies are able to measure the added value. Companies always need to know if they are getting return on investment; even if we are getting ROI how can we calculate it? One of the reasons that ROI can be particularly difficult to calculate is the different factors that impact an intervention.
